Abstract

Display advertising has been the most misunderstood marketing channel over the past decade. Most advertisers, judging «low CTR means low effect», cut budgets and consequently missed the pre-demand brand awareness that search ads cannot capture. As Belch & Belch (2020) note, display's true value lies at the Attention–Interest stages of the AIDA model, complementary to search's Desire–Action stages.

Post-2024, the situation is even clearer. Per Nielsen's cross-media research, users exposed to display ads have 68% higher search-ads CTR vs. unexposed users. That is: display creates search-ad performance.

This whitepaper is based on Insa Communication's 2022–2025 display campaign log (42 partners, KRW 24B display spend, 8.5B impressions). The 12-segment remarketing framework and IAB view-through-attribution empirical results are presented.

Section 01Introduction — Misperception and Rediscovery

Display advertising has been the most misunderstood channel for a decade — most advertisers cut display budgets on «low CTR» grounds, missing pre-demand brand awareness that search cannot capture. Per Nielsen (2024), users exposed to display have 68% higher search-ads CTR — display creates search performance.

“Looking at display ads' CTR is like judging a movie's box-office success by the trailer's viewership. The real metric is whether the trailer brings the audience to the theater.”

Section 02Literature Review — 4 Networks and IAB Standards

2.1 · Google Display Network (GDN)

GDN covers the world's largest advertising network of 35M+ sites worldwide, YouTube, and Gmail. Post-2023 reorganization, Smart Display campaigns merged into standard Display, with Optimized Targeting and Smart Bidding as core AI automation.

2.2 · Naver GFA (Guaranteed Frequency Ads)

Naver's performance banner-ad system covering Korea's largest inventory — Naver Main, Blog, Cafe, News. Smaller than GDN in inventory but overwhelming Korea-domestic reach.

2.3 · Kakao Moment

Kakao ecosystem ad system across Daum · Kakao Talk Channel · Kakao View. MZ-generation reach and Kakao Talk Channel integration is the distinctive strength.

2.4 · Programmatic DSP (Demand-Side Platform)

The Trade Desk, DV360, MediaMath and other DSPs use real-time bidding (RTB). The IAB's OpenRTB standard underpins the protocol.

2.5 · IAB View-through Attribution Standard

IAB's «View-through Attribution Guidelines» define the view-through window as 24 hours to 30 days and recommend a 7-day standard window. Without view-through attribution, display contribution is underestimated by up to 60% per IAB's own empirical data.

Section 03Methodology — 42 Partners · KRW 24B Ad Spend

Empirical data derives from the display campaign log Insa Communication executed 2022–2025. 42 partners, total display ad spend approximately KRW 24 billion, impressions approximately 8.5 billion.

3.1 · Patent Attribution System (KIPO pending)

Insa Medi AI's «Omnichannel Causal Attribution-Based Intelligent Ad Media Recommendation System» (KIPO pending) combines:

  • Shapley Value-based contribution allocation — fair channel-attribution via cooperative-game-theory solution
  • Reinforcement-learning budget reallocation — automatic budget transfer from real-time performance data
  • Multi-touch Attribution extension — expanding IAB's 30-day view-through window to infinite sequences

Section 0412-Segment Remarketing Framework

Insa's 12 standardized remarketing segments — each with distinct creative, CTA, and frequency design:

Section 05Quantitative Analysis — Empirical Effect of View-through

Before-after view-through-attribution comparison across 6 e-commerce partners (2024–2025):

Table 2 · Before-After View-through Attribution Metrics (n=6, 12 months)
MetricBefore (Last-click)After (View-through)Δ
Display-attributed revenue12%31%+158%
Display budget allocation15%28%+87%
Overall ROAS×2.1×3.4+62%
Brand recallbaseline+47%—
CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)baseline−22%—

This data confirms that view-through attribution is not merely a measurement-method change but a trigger for structural budget reallocation. Accurately counting «viewed-then-later-searched-and-purchased» users that last-click missed expands display budget allocation, which increases overall ROAS.

Section 06Discussion & Recommendations — 5 Immediate Actions

  1. Deploy view-through attribution — Google Ads default 30-day window, or leverage patent system.
  2. Design 12-segment remarketing — checkout-abandonment (#04) segment is top priority.
  3. Enforce frequency cap — 3–5/week; exceeding 7 causes brand damage.
  4. Brand safety — whitelist inventory management, exclude MFA (Made-for-Ads) sites.
  5. Creative rotation — refresh assets weekly, continuous A/B.

Section 07Conclusion

Display advertising has long been undervalued by the last-click attribution illusion. When view-through attribution and 12-segment remarketing are applied correctly, display becomes the upstream channel that creates search-ad performance. Free account audit via the consultation portal.
